Quarles
donates $71,433 to Camp Virginia Jaycee
FREDERICKSBURG, VA (June 26, 2009) Thanks to Quarles
convenience store employees and their patrons, there will be more
smiles and lifelong memories made this summer at Camp Virginia Jaycee,
a non-profit organization operating a summer camp for children and
adults with special needs.
So how do they do it in this economy? Through Quarles
convenience stores two annual events: the "Apple Fundraiser"
and Tournament of Hope golf competition.
The "Apple Fundraiser" involves Quarles
convenience store employees selling paper apples to customers for
$1 each. Customers personalize the apples that are then displayed
on the walls of the 20 convenience stores. This year the Front Royal
Quarles employees exceeded all expectations and collected nearly
$6,000 from their generous customers.
In addition to Quarles convenience store efforts,
Quarles hosts an annual Tournament of Hope golf competition at the
Culpeper Country Club. Tournament participants are primarily Quarles
merchant partners and suppliers. All golf tournament and "Apple
Fundraiser" proceeds go directly to Camp Virginia Jaycee. Quarles'
2009 donation to Camp Virginia Jaycee totaled $71,433. This amounted
to $16,000 more than the previous year's donation.
Event coordinator Debbie Ouellette said, "we're
very proud of how our employees and our customers come together
for this important cause. Perhaps it's their childhood summer camp
memories that prompt them to give so generously. It's an honor to
host these events every year. Together with our neighbors we feel
a great sense of accomplishment to give something back to the communities
we serve and live in."

Farms of Bedford Partnership |

This summer Camp Virginia Jaycee had the unique
opportunity to partner with Many Blessings Farm of Bedford, VA to
provide a week of animal bliss to campers. The farm brought in 9
of their own horses to use for therapeutic riding and a horse-drawn
cart for those who did not prefer to be on horseback. This was an
added bonus for campers who were only acquainted with camp's three
horses. Besides riding the horses, the campers also had the opportunity
to groom, paint the horses with washable paint, and bathe them.
Campers had a great time being around the horses
and think fondly of Many Blessings Farm even one month after camp!
At the September respite campers reminisced about painting the horses
and getting to ride the farm's horse, Copper. We hope that this
summer can be the start of a wonderful tradition between CVJC and
Many Blessings Farm.
Thanks to all the horses and volunteers at Many
Blessings Farm!

Legacy Left Behind |

Not only was camp
a little quieter without the campers, but in August, Camp Virginia
Jaycee said goodbye to one of their most dedicated staff members.
Charlotte "Charlie" Inman ended her 18 month contract
working |
as the Program Director and returned to
her home and family in Manchester, England. Charlie's hard work,
positive attitude, energy, and compassion earned the respect and
love of both campers and staff. This year, she was awarded the title
of 2008 Staff Member of the Year.
She will be sorely missed at Camp Virginia Jaycee!
The staff and campers hope that someday her path will lead her back
to Blue Ridge, Virginia, if only for a visit!
